Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.

 

Land Area
A main island with over 60 surrounding islets; it has a total land area of 716.1 sq km. 

Founding Year
Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles.

Busiest Port in the World
With approximately 200 shipping lines connecting to about 600 ports, Singapore is the busiest port in the world in terms of containers handled.

Language
Four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Widely spoken and understood, English is the working language for business and administration.
